ECMWF IFS deterministic wave model now available

|

GribStream now serves ECMWF IFS Wave deterministic forecasts for global ocean wave conditions.

On June 14, 2025, we added the ECMWF IFS Wave deterministic dataset.

About IFS Wave

IFS Wave is ECMWF's global spectral wave model (ecWAM), coupled to the atmospheric IFS. It predicts the growth, propagation, and dissipation of wind-generated waves, using wind forcing and wave data assimilation. Core outputs include significant wave height, mean and peak period, mean direction, and wind-sea vs. swell partitions.

Coverage

  • 0.25 deg global grid (open-data subset)
  • 00 and 12 UTC cycles
  • 3-hourly steps to 144 h, then 6-hourly to 360 h (15 days)

Why it matters

This dataset is a foundation for marine routing, offshore operations, and coastal hazard monitoring. You can assess wave risk with deterministic guidance and pair it with atmospheric forecasts in the same workflow.
