Official source: Météo-France publishes the AROME 0.01° packages as hourly analysis and forecast fields on its EURW1S100 regular grid. The current package guide documents the domain, schedule, and field groups. The dataset is available without account registration.

Current GribStream scope: aromefrance exposes 17 surface and near-surface fields from all eight daily cycles, with hourly lead times from 0 to 51 hours and a rolling five-day archive. Eight fields are present at lead zero and 16 are available on forecast hours.

License: Météo-France publishes this dataset under France's Open Licence 2.0, which permits commercial reuse with attribution. GribStream preserves Météo-France as the dataset creator and source.

Description

AROME is Météo-France's operational limited-area model for fine-scale weather over metropolitan France and neighboring countries. Météo-France's system overview traces its operational service to 2008 and describes an ALADIN-derived dynamical core with physical parameterizations largely inherited from the Méso-NH research model.

Since October 2024, AROME-France has used an operational 3DEnVar data-assimilation system. Its flow-dependent ensemble covariances determine how observations influence nearby model grid points, replacing the static, horizontally uniform background-error covariances of the earlier 3D-Var analysis.

The public 0.01° product is a regular latitude-longitude representation of that forecast. It covers a 2,801 by 1,791 rectangular array, but the actual AROME domain is trapezoidal; cells outside the valid model footprint are missing. Applications should therefore use the published coverage rather than assuming every corner of the envelope contains data.

The aromefrance inventory is deliberately surface-focused. It combines temperature, humidity, wind, pressure, and cloud cover with accumulated rain, snow, and graupel; surface-based CAPE; maximum simulated radar reflectivity factor; and synthetic infrared brightness temperature. Météo-France defines these source fields in its ARPEGE/AROME parameter glossary. The reflectivity and brightness-temperature fields are model diagnostics, not radar or satellite observations.

AROME's fine grid can represent localized terrain and convective structures that coarser regional and global products smooth out, but resolution is not certainty. This is a single deterministic forecast with a 51-hour horizon, and small timing or position errors can be important for individual thunderstorms or narrow precipitation bands. Use ensembles and broader-scale models when the application needs explicit uncertainty or longer-range context.
