Australian weather in historical context

Convection-scale downscaling brings an Australia-wide view of historical weather at approximately 4.4 km. BARRA-C2 is part of the Bureau of Meteorology's BARRA2 family, which uses ERA5 boundary conditions to add regional modelling detail. Reanalysis combines observations and physical modelling; values at a grid cell are estimates, not measurements from a weather station.

What you can query

The initial GribStream release includes 28 hourly fields, from January 1992 through January 2026. The selection covers screen and surface temperature, humidity, surface and turbine-height wind, gusts, pressure, precipitation, solar and longwave radiation, cloud, evaporation, CAPE and CIN. Missing source values remain missing.

These are historical hourly conditions with zero forecast lead time. BARRA2 is not a live forecast; newly released historical data can lag the present substantially. Instantaneous fields use whole-hour timestamps; one-hour means and extrema use the source interval midpoint at half past the hour. The inventory distinguishes these with selectors such as 1h_mean, 1h_minimum and 1h_maximum. Precipitation is a rate, and direct solar radiation is on a horizontal surface, not direct normal irradiance. Other fields, output frequencies and BARRA-RE2 are outside this initial inventory.

Questions this record can help answer

Compare past hot and cold periods, relate weather to energy demand, investigate wind and solar resources, or place rainfall events in historical context. Check the reconstruction against observations at the locations relevant to your analysis. Finer grid spacing alone does not guarantee greater accuracy.

Scientific limitations and attribution

Consult the provider's known issues, including effects near domain boundaries. Model and observational biases matter when interpreting local extremes. Attribute the Australian Bureau of Meteorology under CC BY 4.0 and retain the source product/version in your analysis.
