Descrizione

GFS (Global Forecast System) è il principale modello numerico globale di previsione meteorologica di NOAA/NCEP. È un sistema accoppiato che combina atmosfera, oceano, suolo/terra e ghiaccio marino per simulare l'evoluzione del tempo in tre dimensioni.

La componente atmosferica usa il FV3 dynamical core (nucleo dinamico) con un passo di griglia orizzontale di circa 0.25 gradi, cioè circa 28 km. GFS gira globalmente con circa 127 livelli verticali fino alla mesopausa e produce previsioni quattro volte al giorno.

In GribStream il dataset gfs espone la griglia globale da 0.25 gradi. Le previsioni sono orarie fino a 120 h e poi ogni 3 ore fino al giorno 16, quindi fino a 384 h. Le condizioni iniziali arrivano dal GDAS/GFS Analysis System, che assimila osservazioni satellitari, radar, radiosonde, stazioni di superficie e altre fonti.

GFS è una base per diversi sistemi NOAA. Supporta l'ensemble GEFS e le sue varianti onde, chimica e aerosol, fornisce contesto a sistemi stagionali e substagionali come CFS e dà condizioni al contorno a modelli regionali come HRRR e RAP.

I clienti GribStream usano GFS per previsioni globali, previsioni a medio termine, rotte aeree e marittime, modellazione ambientale, pianificazione agricola, downscaling (adattamento a scala più fine), variabili in ingresso per machine learning e backtesting operativo. Di solito è il primo dataset da controllare quando un workflow richiede copertura globale e un lungo orizzonte di previsione.
