Description

GDAS (Global Data Assimilation System) is NOAA/NCEP’s global analysis system that assimilates observations—satellites, radiosondes, aircraft, surface networks, and more—into a physically consistent atmospheric state. These analyses are the starting point for the GFS forecast cycles, so GDAS is often the best place to look when you need near-real-time “what happened” gridded fields rather than longer-range guidance.

On GribStream, GDAS is exposed as a compact, analysis-first dataset: global atmospheric fields on a 0.25° latitude/longitude grid with short lead times (0–9 hours). This makes it useful for verification and bias studies, event reconstruction, machine learning labels, and any workflow that benefits from staying close to the analysis cycle.

Because the data shares many of the same variable conventions as GFS, it’s easy to pair GDAS and GFS in the same pipeline: use GDAS as an analysis baseline and compare it against forecasts from GFS, ensembles like GEFS, or AI models such as GraphCast.
