RAP (Rapid Refresh) ist das stündlich aktualisierte mesoskalige Analyse- und Vorhersagesystem von NOAA/NCEP für Kurzfristvorhersagen auf kontinentaler Skala. Es kombiniert ein Vorhersagemodell mit einem Datenassimilationszyklus, um nahezu aktuelle Analysen und Vorhersagen auf einem Grid zu erzeugen.
RAP nutzt eine Version des Weather Research and Forecasting-Kerns (WRF-ARW), die stündlich über das Rapid Data Assimilation System (RAP-DAS) initialisiert wird. Der Assimilationszyklus verarbeitet In-situ-Beobachtungen, Satellitenradiancen, radarbasierte Niederschlagsinformationen und konventionelle Höhenluftdaten.
Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf Mesoskala- und Grenzschichtphänomenen mit hoher Aktualisierungsfrequenz: Gewitterentwicklung, Frontdurchgänge und bodennahe Windmuster. RAP arbeitet mit einem Grid-Abstand von ungefähr 13 km. Damit bietet es mehr regionale Details als globale Modelle, behält aber breite kontinentale Abdeckung. Die Läufe erscheinen stündlich und reichen in GribStream bis ungefähr 51 h.
RAP ist außerdem ein wichtiger Eingang für den National Blend of Models (NBM) und ergänzt HRRR: HRRR liefert feinere CONUS-Auflösung, während RAP Nordamerika breiter im Kurzfristbereich abdeckt.
In GribStream ist rap nützlich für Luftfahrtentscheidungen, Monitoring von schwerem Wetter, schnell wechselnde Ereignisse, Rampen bei erneuerbarer Erzeugung, Verifikation und Machine-Learning-Modelle für Nowcasting oder Bias-Korrektur.
