HRRR (High-Resolution Rapid Refresh) es el modelo operativo de NOAA/NCEP para pronóstico de muy corto plazo y alta resolución sobre Estados Unidos continental. Está diseñado para productos donde tormentas, cambios de viento, nubes bajas, niebla, humo u otros fenómenos locales pueden cambiar rápido.
HRRR combina un núcleo WRF-ARW con un ciclo rápido de asimilación de datos que incorpora estaciones de superficie y mesonet, radiosondeos, informes de aeronaves, vientos satelitales y reflectividad de radar MRMS.
El modelo corre sobre una grilla CONUS de 3 km, suficientemente fina para representar muchas estructuras de escala convectiva sin depender solo de parametrizaciones convectivas gruesas.
HRRR está afinado para fenómenos de mesoescala y de capa límite: iniciación y evolución de tormentas, nubes bajas y niebla, bandas de nieve, vientos canalizados, gradientes de temperatura cerca de superficie y dispersión de humo. Su frecuencia horaria lo hace práctico para paneles, alertas y verificación durante el día.
La guía HRRR es una entrada importante de corto plazo para NBM y también informó el desarrollo de RRFS. Para tiempos válidos de superficie cada 15 minutos, usa el complemento HRRR Sub-hourly.
