Status: GribStream currently serves fourcastnetgfs as a historical experimental archive. The public S3 bucket and the GribStream index do not show newer FourCastNetGFS runs after 2026-03-01 12:00 UTC. Use AIGFS, AIGFS Pressure, or AIGEFS for current NOAA AI global guidance.
FourCastNet Global Forecast System is an experimental NOAA AI forecast dataset. Built on the FourCastNet framework developed by NVIDIA and Microsoft, it applies Fourier Neural Operators and deep learning techniques to emulate and accelerate the Global Forecast System (GFS). In GribStream, it is now best treated as a historical comparison dataset rather than a current operational feed.
The underlying machine-learning model was trained on historical atmospheric reanalysis data, then NOAA's implementation initialized forecasts from GDAS analysis fields and emitted GFS-like GRIB2 products. That made FourCastNetGFS useful to compare against physics-based models like ECMWF IFS and other experimental AI-driven systems such as GraphCast.
FourCastNetGFS remains useful for historical AI-model comparison: it helps evaluate how Fourier Neural Operator-based guidance behaved against GFS, GraphCastGFS, AIGFS, and physics-based global models across past events.
